The main features of these animals have in common are:

  • 6 legs
  • one pair of antennae
  • a segmented body of three body parts

Wings are generally held vertically over body at rest. However, when butterflies are basking in the sun, their wings are held outstretched at sides.

 

 

How do butterflies breathe?

Adult butterflies, as well as caterpillars, breathe through a series of tiny openings along the sides of their bodies, called "spiracles." From each spiracle, a tube called a "trachea" carries oxygen into the body. Butterflies don't have noses and lungs as we do.

Odrasli leptiri kao i gusenice dišu kroz niz sićušnih otvora duž bočnih strana tela, koji se zovu "disaljke". Od svake disaljke, cevčica koja se zove "trachea" dovodi kiseonik u telo. Leptiri nemaju nos i pluća kao mi.

At night or during bad weather, butterflies will usually hang from the undersides of leaves, or crawl into crevices between rocks or other objects, and sleep.

 

 

What do butterfies eat?

Adult butterflies sip nectar from flowers through their tongues, which act like straws. A very few butterflies do not visit flowers, but instead feed on tree sap or rotting organic material.
